The WATCH?!
Aiya, I think my English is getting worse and worse everyday. Actually, I know my English is getting worse and worse everyday. Especially these days when I'm finding myself saying: "The what? The what?" several times a day. Last time when I went with the kids to Pinecoteca in São Paulo, I sat with the Art trainee, Kalil, who speaks almost no English at all. During the whole 1.5 hrs that it took for us to get to the museum, I was chatting with a student (in English) while Kalil was like "the watch?! the watch?!" which meant: "What?! What?!" the entire time. In Portuguese, 't' at the end of a word is pronounced like 'ch' as in church. So it's common to hear ppl say 'watch' or even 'watchy' but he had to throw in the 'the' in front and I thought I was going crazy listening to this guy shouting "the watch?!" a million times.
Re: Birthdays
Now I know how to sing Happy Birthday in Portuguese. In fact, I think it's almost necessary that I learn to sing the song since it's always somebody's birthday every other day at the school. The music is the same as the Happy Birthday song but each phrase is different. The song also has extended versions which sound like chants and cheers. I am still learning those ;)
Earlier on it was non-stop chocolates (Pascoa) and then non-stop churrascos. Now it's been non-stop (birthday) cakes! Yes, cakes! Yikes, cakes! The birthdays were of the students... ex-landlord... nobody... staff... And interestingly, I've already been invited to TWO separate birthday parties which are both coincidently on August 5th. But I don't know if I can attend either one because on Aug. 6 I will fly back to Canada!
Re: Wedding
My sister will be getting married in August, and her and her fiancé have booked a ticket for me back to Vancouver from August 6-17. Already some of the kids have asked me if they could give me money to bring them back some presents from Canada! I think it'd be great to go back to Canada to see my family and some friends. It's a bit scary to imagine what things are like back home while time and changes are continuing on and occuring with my absence.
Re: Music
I went to a music concert here in São José last weekend for the mall Center Vale Shopping's 19 years celebration. It was open-air with 3 different shows by Vanessa da Mata, Armandinho (my favourite), and Capital Inicial. The music were MPB, reggae, and rock, respectively, and the last band, Capital Inicial put on a great performance, and especially when they played the Ramones' "I Wanna be Sedated," the only song during the entire show which I knew how to sing to ;) The place wasn't too crowded, but I saw many of the students at the concert. The night turned really cold, and I was getting frustrated and tired when we had to wait for extra 30 minutes for the van to arrive to pick us up at 5:30a.m.
Re: World Cup
O-lei o lei o lei... ! Let the party begin!
It's getting way past my bedtime, and I still have to wake up early for work. But I'm really looking forward to the weekend because I think I will go travelling again! This time to Santos, a coastal city about 2 hrs. away. I will go with Davi and others to visit and stay with Davi's grandparents. Even though I've got no money (now) and work hours are long, but life is good, especially when I have the chance to travel :D
